Dear Rotarians, our year is half over. 😊 You have done a wonderful job on recruiting new members. 😊 Our district is one of three that is actually growing in our Zone 28. Blind River joined us, Val d’Or has been reinstated, Huntsville Twilight People of Action is chartered, as is the Rotaract Club of Parry Sound (Ukrainian). There will be a new e-club to make an Impact in our District. Contact Phyllis Winnington-Ingram, Membership Director for more information. Congratulations!
 
We have projects to become a Peace Building District (need to raise $15,000 US). Contact Arlette Utton and have your club become a Peace Building Club – you are doing it already. There will be an International Peace Conference in Birmingham, Alabama, 4-6th of May, for Rotarians and Peace Scholars and the money that we raise to be a Peace Building District can support this conference.
 
Raise funds for the Misko-Aki Indigenous Museum in Gravenhurst (need to raise $50,000). Contact Deborah Emory or Nicole Van Stone.
 
We are looking for two high school students, one Indigenous and one non-Indigenous to go to a Youth 2 Youth camp in Winnipeg, for youth leaders for March 27-31, 2023. Contact Nicole Van Stone for more information.
 
What are you doing for the environment? Contact PDG Lynne Chant re: Operation Pollination and other initiatives; and consider planning a project for Earth Day 2023 (April 22nd). And contact Kevin DeGroot  regarding our next Day of Action.
 
We are supporting various global grants, Fellowship Exchanges (Philippines has been sold out) (Indian people are arriving in May this year and will need to be hosted and we are taking applicants for either November 2023 or January 2024. Please contact me if interested. The Peterborough Kawartha Lakes club is leading a trip to Nepal in April. Contact Paul Landau for more info.
 
The eradication of Polio continues. Unfortunately, COVID, extreme weather, and war have made it much harder for vaccinators to do their jobs. This year, 30 children were paralyzed. In Pakistan alone, 20 children have been paralyzed, up from just one last year. Cases have also spread to Malawi and Mozambique and one in New York. There could not be a better reminder that polio anywhere is a threat everywhere. We now have a new oral vaccine with less side effects, called nOPV2, that will prevent outbreaks of polio variants. The Global Polio Eradication Initiative adopted a smart five-year strategy for eradication. And donors stepped up with $2.6 billion. Bill Gates thanked Rotary International for raising $1.8 billion with him.

Chers Rotariens, notre année est à moitié terminée. 😊 Vous avez fait un travail formidable sur le recrutement de nouveaux membres. 😊 Notre district est l'un des trois qui grandit actuellement dans notre Zone 28. Nous avons des projets pour devenir un district de consolidation de la paix (besoin de récolter 15 000 $ US). Contactez Arlette Utton et faites en sorte que votre club devienne un club de consolidation de la paix - vous le faites déjà. Il y aura une conférence internationale sur la paix à Birmingham, Alabama, du 4 au 6 mai, pour les Rotariens et les chercheurs de la paix et l'argent que nous collectons pour être un district de consolidation de la paix peut soutenir cette conférence.

L'éradication de la poliomyélite se poursuit. Malheureusement, le COVID, les conditions météorologiques extrêmes et la guerre ont rendu beaucoup plus difficile pour les vaccinateurs de faire leur travail. Cette année, 30 enfants ont été paralysés. Rien qu'au Pakistan, 20 enfants ont été paralysés, contre un seul l'année dernière. Des cas se sont également propagés au Malawi et au Mozambique et un à New York. Il ne pouvait y avoir de meilleur rappel que la polio n'importe où est une menace partout. Nous avons maintenant un nouveau vaccin oral avec moins d'effets secondaires, appelé nVPO2, qui préviendra les épidémies de variantes de la poliomyélite. L'Initiative mondiale pour l'éradication de la poliomyélite a adopté une stratégie quinquennale intelligente d'éradication. Et les donateurs ont intensifié avec 2,6 milliards de dollars. Bill Gates a remercié le Rotary International d'avoir levé 1,8 milliard de dollars avec lui.
